Supreme Court to Decide Nnamdi Kanu’s Fate Today

The Supreme Court is poised to deliver a crucial judgment today, Friday, determining the future of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu has been in detention since June 2021, following his rearrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria.

Upon his return, the Nigerian Government charged Kanu before the Federal High Court in Abuja with a four-count indictment, including treasonable felony, conspiracy to commit treasonable felony, illegal importation of radio equipment, and defamation of former President Muhammadu Buhari. These charges were later replaced by a 14-count charge focused on terrorism and membership in a proscribed group, which was eventually reduced to seven counts by the court of appeals.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the appellate court’s decision, the Nigerian Government has taken the matter to the Supreme Court, seeking a resolution to the legal impasse.

Commenting on the impending judgment, Deji Adeyanju, an Abuja-based socio-political activist, emphasized the importance of the Supreme Court’s decision being perceived as unbiased. Adeyanju appealed for confidence in the judiciary, stating, “My hope is that the Supreme Court will deliver a judgment that is acceptable to everyone, but no matter what the Supreme Court delivers, it will not be acceptable to some.”

Adeyanju further called for Kanu to be granted bail, asserting that bail is not an escape from justice but an opportunity for the defendant to adequately defend himself. He urged against the politicization of legal proceedings, emphasizing the need for a fair and transparent judicial process.
