Supreme Court Set to Make Landmark Rulings in Governorship Election Cases: Tension Grips Kano, Plateau, Zamfara

In a day of high stakes for Nigerian politics, the Supreme Court is poised to deliver judgments today on governorship appeals in seven states, including Lagos, Kano, Zamfara, Plateau, Ebonyi, Bauchi, and Cross River. Notably, Kano and Plateau are at the center of heightened anticipation, with the apex court’s decisions holding the key to the fate of incumbent governors.

The Nigerian police have deployed operatives in Kano metropolis to maintain peace in anticipation of the court’s rulings. Legal representatives from both sides passionately presented their cases before the Supreme Court justices, aiming to sway the outcome in their favor.

In the Kano appeal, the tribunal had nullified Governor Abba Yusuf’s election, citing 165,663 invalid votes. The appeal court upheld this decision, faulting the lower court for not disqualifying the governor due to alleged improper sponsorship by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress was declared the winner, a decision Governor Yusuf hopes the apex court will reverse.

For Plateau, Caleb Mutfwang’s election victory was initially upheld by the State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal. However, the appeal court overturned this verdict, declaring Nentawe Goshwe of the APC as the rightful winner. The court emphasized the breach of the law by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for not complying with the Plateau State High Court’s directive to conduct valid congresses before nominating candidates.

As the nation awaits these crucial decisions, tension remains palpable in Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara, adding a layer of suspense to the unfolding political drama.
