Student-Teacher Arrested After Pupil Loses Eye in Ogun State Classroom Incident

A 400-level student from Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, Adeola Adeyemo, has been arrested in Ogun State following a classroom accident that resulted in an 11-year-old pupil losing her right eye. The incident occurred at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in Obada Oko around 3 p.m., during Adeyemo’s teaching practice.

According to the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the pupil, Alao Idera, suffered the injury when she rushed toward Adeyemo, who was holding a cane. The cane accidentally pierced the pupil’s eye. The primary six pupil was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where her injured eye was surgically removed.

Police investigations revealed that Adeyemo was not disciplining the pupil at the time of the accident. Odutola explained that Adeyemo was holding the cane while preparing for an end-of-year party, a common practice among teachers. However, when the pupil ran toward her, the tragic accident occurred.

In a distressing turn of events, Adeyemo reportedly attempted to ingest harmful substances after learning that the pupil’s eye had been removed. The police intervened and rushed her to the hospital, where she is now in stable condition.

This incident comes shortly after another tragedy involving a teacher in the state. A teacher at Obada Grammar School, Azamdjo Elijah, was arrested following the death of a Senior Secondary School 2 student, Monday Arijo. Elijah allegedly instructed the student to perform 162 frog jumps and administered 24 strokes of the cane, actions linked to the student’s death.

The Ogun State Police Command continues its investigations into both cases.
