Student Dies While Charging Phone During Thunderstorm
A tragic incident claimed the life of a 100-level student of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, on Friday evening. Gbolahan Ojolo, a Business Administration student, was electrocuted while playing a game on his mobile phone, which was connected to a charger during a thunderstorm. The electrocution was reportedly triggered by a lightning strike.
Ojolo was in his room at a private hostel near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) junction when the unfortunate event occurred. Following the incident, his remains were transported to the morgue of Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, after clearance from the police.
The Registrar of the university, Mr. Funso Ojo, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday, describing it as a painful loss for the institution. He stated that the police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the electrocution.
According to the university, Gbolahan’s father was immediately informed and has since arrived in Ilesa. University officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Asaolu, Mr. Ojo, the Dean of Student Affairs, the Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, the Head of the Department of Business Administration, and the Area Commander of Police were all present to console the bereaved father.
The University of Ilesa community expressed its sorrow over the incident, extending heartfelt condolences to Gbolahan’s family, friends, and classmates.
