Strike Continues as Minister Wike’s Court Order Affects Only Leaders, Not Unions, Say FCT Workers

The ongoing strike by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) workers will continue, trade unions have confirmed, following recent legal developments involving the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Contrary to reports suggesting that the strike had been halted by court action, the unions clarified that Minister Wike obtained an injunction against only two union leaders, not the unions themselves.

In a statement, the FCT trade unions said, “Minister Wike did not sue the striking trade unions at the National Industrial Court. The case targets only two leaders in their personal capacities. Today’s interlocutory injunction applies solely to them. Our strike continues.”

Court documents reviewed show the suit was filed at the National Industrial Court, Abuja Division, with Hon. Minister, Federal Capital Territory, and the Federal Capital Territory Administration listed as claimants, and Rifkatu Iortyer and Abdullahi Umar Saleh as defendants. The order, dated January 27, 2026, restrains the two individuals from participating in actions that could disrupt the operations of the FCT Administration, including strikes, picketing, road blockages, or other forms of industrial disruption.

While the injunction mentions “members of the Joint Unions Action Committee,” the unions stressed that it is legally binding only on the two named leaders and does not restrict the unions or the workforce at large.

The unions warned against misinterpretations of the order, emphasizing that FCT workers should not suspend their industrial action based on misleading reports. They reaffirmed their commitment to continue the strike until their demands are met.

The matter has been adjourned to March 25, 2026, for a Motion on Notice.
