Stop Killing Peaceful Protesters, Atiku Tells Security Agencies, Tasks President Tinubu to Show True Leadership
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called on the police and security agencies to cease the shooting and killing of protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria.
Nigerians have organized a 10-day nationwide protest against what they describe as bad governance. The protests, which began peacefully, turned violent as miscreants hijacked the movement in several states, leading to destruction and looting of properties.
On Saturday, security forces, including the police, used force, such as tear gas and live bullets, to disperse protesters in various states, including Abuja. Amnesty International reported that at least 13 people have been killed during the protests, mostly by security forces. However, the police stated that seven people had died, none of them by their hands.
In a statement on Saturday, Atiku Abubakar questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in managing the demonstrations. He condemned the use of live ammunition on peaceful protesters, likening it to the “dark days of military dictatorship.”
“It is crucial to remind the government and security agencies of their paramount duty to ensure a safe and secure environment where citizens can exercise their right to protest without fear,” Atiku said.
He urged President Bola Tinubu to address and implement the demands of the Nigerian people, and called on the international community, including the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, to monitor the situation and hold the Nigerian leadership accountable.
Atiku also encouraged protesters to remain peaceful and avoid violence, stressing that those engaging in looting and destruction should be prosecuted. He emphasized that such acts undermine the legitimate protests and benefit those who oppose their cause.
“President Tinubu must demonstrate true leadership by immediately addressing and implementing the demands of the Nigerian people,” Atiku concluded.
