Speeding Driver Kills Teenage Siblings in Ogun
Two teenage siblings have lost their lives after being struck by a speeding vehicle earlier yesterday. The tragedy happened around 8 a.m. in the Ijebu Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to Bolaji Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, a Honda car, allegedly traveling at a high speed, collided with the pedestrians, leading to their immediate demise.
Swift response from TRACE officials, the Army, police, and other emergency responders prevented potential chaos as some enraged youths in the area attempted to retaliate against the driver and set the vehicle ablaze.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the driver lost control of the speeding Honda car, striking the siblings who were walking by the roadside. The incident prompted a strong reaction from the community, narrowly averted by the timely intervention of authorities.
TRACE spokesperson, Akinbiyi, stated, “The accident vehicle has been towed to Obalende Police Station, Ijebu-Ide, for further investigation. At the same time, the bodies of the two siblings (male and female) have been deposited at the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital mortuary.”
As the community mourns the tragic loss, Akinbiyi emphasized the need for responsible driving, urging motorists to avoid excessive speed on expressways. Pedestrians were also cautioned to exercise caution by facing oncoming traffic to enhance road safety.
This incident echoes a similar tragedy reported on March 2, where a mob reportedly set ablaze a Hilux Toyota vehicle after it allegedly caused the death of three people near the Kara-OPIC bus stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps is currently investigating the incident.
