Sowore Meets Jonathan Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention, Ex-President Pledges to Engage Tinubu
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Friday to seek his support for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Speaking after the meeting, Sowore disclosed that Jonathan acknowledged the importance of resolving Kanu’s case in a manner that fosters peace, justice, and national reconciliation. He said while Jonathan would not be making any public statement on the issue, the former president recognized the urgency of addressing the matter decisively and fairly.
Sowore added that Jonathan promised to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu soon to discuss possible steps toward resolving the situation. “He said he will not be issuing any open positions but acknowledges the need to end the chapter and encourage a solution that promotes healing. He promised to meet Tinubu about it,” Sowore said.
In a post shared on Facebook, Sowore thanked Jonathan for his willingness to engage Tinubu and for recognizing the importance of national healing through justice. He noted that Jonathan has now joined a growing list of Nigerians—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, senior lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), and Senator Shehu Sani—who have called for Kanu’s release.
Sowore reiterated that Kanu remains in detention despite multiple court rulings ordering his release. He argued that Kanu’s activism stems from a legitimate struggle against marginalization and urged political, cultural, and religious leaders across the country, especially from the South East, to support the call for his freedom.
The meeting comes as Sowore and several civil society groups intensify advocacy efforts for Kanu’s release, including the planned #FreeNnamdiKanu peaceful march to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on October 20.
