Soludo’s Government Mandates Repainting of Buildings in Anambra, Sets July 1 for Enforcement

The Anambra State Government has issued a directive to residents and property owners to repaint dilapidated and unkempt buildings, particularly those in public view. This move, the government says, is aimed at enhancing the state’s aesthetic appeal and promoting a clean, eco-friendly environment.

In an official statement released on Thursday, June 19, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, emphasized that buildings with faded or washed-out paint significantly mar the visual landscape, especially in major urban areas such as Onitsha, Awka, Nkpor, Nnewi, and Ekwulobia.

According to Dr. Odimegwu, the repainting campaign takes immediate effect, with a statewide enforcement exercise scheduled to commence on **July 1, 2025**. Inspectors and regulators will begin field operations to ensure compliance with the new directive.

“This initiative is part of the state’s broader strategy to strengthen existing building structures, improve visual aesthetics, and expand green spaces,” the commissioner stated. “It is also backed by the Anambra State Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law 2024, Part 4, Section 79 (1-7).”

The statement further noted that all residential and commercial buildings in areas visible to the public—referred to as *anyaora* zones—must be properly maintained and repainted where necessary. Particular attention will be given to structures that have not been repainted in the last 10 years or those whose current condition defaces the environment.

“Notice is hereby given to all residents and occupants of buildings in public view across the state to begin immediate compliance,” the release read. “We are committed to creating a cleaner and more beautiful Anambra, and we urge all citizens and corporate organizations to support this vision.”

The government stressed that failure to comply may result in enforcement actions once inspections begin in July.
