Soldier Sentenced to Death for Murder of Islamic Cleric in Yobe State
In a landmark verdict, Justice Usman Zannah of the Yobe State High Court in Potiskum has pronounced the death penalty for Lance Corporal John Gabriel. This ruling comes in response to Gabriel’s conviction on charges of armed robbery and the brutal murder of Islamic cleric Goni Aisami in Yobe State.
During the trial, both accused soldiers, John Gabriel and Ádámù Gideon, confessed to conspiring to murder Sheik Aisami last August. The court found Mr. Gabriel guilty on two counts, namely armed robbery and murder, leading to his ultimate sentence of death by hanging.
In a separate ruling, Lance Corporal Ádámù Gideon was convicted on the first count of robbery and received a 10-year prison sentence. However, he was acquitted of the second count related to murder.
The incident involved Mr. Gabriel fatally shooting Mr. Aisami and attempting to steal his car after the cleric kindly offered him a lift. The severity of the crimes prompted the army to dismiss both soldiers, subsequently handing them over to the police for prosecution.
This case serves as a grim reminder of the consequences that individuals, even in uniform, face when committing heinous acts. The Yobe State High Court’s decision reflects a commitment to justice in the face of such grievous offenses.
