The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the death of a soldier following a confrontation with a special constabulary officer at Agyaragu market in Lafia Local Government Area on Sunday.

The altercation reportedly began as a personal dispute between the two men. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, the soldier, who was on leave from his assignment in Borno State, allegedly attacked the constabulary officer with a knife. In the ensuing struggle, the constable reportedly gained control of the weapon and stabbed the soldier in self-defense.

Both men sustained serious injuries and were immediately rushed to the hospital. The soldier, however, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, while the constabulary officer continues to receive medical care.

The aftermath of the incident saw heightened tension in the area. The soldier’s relatives, reportedly angered by his death, attempted to storm the local police station, leading to a confrontation that resulted in the deaths of two individuals. Two others were injured in the incident and have been hospitalized.

DSP Nansel confirmed that order has since been restored in Agyaragu. Nasarawa’s Commissioner of Police, CP Shehu Umar Nadada, visited the community personally to assess the situation and meet with local leaders to ensure calm.
