Six Nigerians Deported from US as Part of Crime-Related Immigration Sweep
Six Nigerians have been deported from the United States following charges related to various crimes committed in the country. The deportations are part of a broader US government initiative targeting at least 3,000 Nigerians involved in criminal activities. The six individuals arrived on Wednesday morning at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos aboard a Delta Airlines flight. Upon arrival, they were received by officials from several Nigerian government agencies, who will decide on the next steps to take.
This action aligns with policies introduced under former President Donald Trump’s administration, which emphasized stricter immigration enforcement. During his tenure, Trump launched a significant crackdown on immigration violations, increasing arrests and workplace raids targeting undocumented immigrants. His administration also focused on identifying and penalizing “sanctuary cities” that were seen as not cooperating with federal immigration enforcement. Trump issued executive orders that threatened to cut federal funding to states and cities that resisted federal deportation efforts, setting deadlines for identifying jurisdictions considered uncooperative.
The Trump administration’s approach led to a tripling of immigration arrests at workplaces, with plans to increase enforcement further. These measures reflect a broader effort to streamline immigration controls and remove individuals involved in criminal conduct from the US. The recent deportation of the six Nigerians is one of several expected as part of this continuing policy.
