Showdown Looms as Senator Natasha Vows to Return Tuesday Despite Senate Conditions

Tensions are rising in the National Assembly as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has vowed to storm the Senate on Tuesday, defying unresolved conditions reportedly set by Senate leadership following a dramatic court ruling ordering her reinstatement.

In a video now circulating widely on social media, the Kogi Central senator declared her intention to resume legislative duties just days after a Federal High Court nullified her six-month suspension, calling it unconstitutional and a violation of her constituents’ rights. “I thank you for your support. I am glad we are victorious today. We shall resume in the Senate on Tuesday by the grace of God,” she told cheering supporters.

Justice Binta Nyako, who delivered the explosive ruling, criticized the Senate for overstepping its constitutional authority and ordered Akpoti-Uduaghan’s immediate recall. She also emphasized that prolonged suspensions infringe on the electorate’s right to representation and called for a review of the Senate’s disciplinary procedures.

The legal battle took a fiery turn when the court found Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of contempt over a satirical Facebook post directed at Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in violation of an earlier gag order. She was fined ₦5 million and ordered to issue a public apology in two national newspapers and on her social media.

Despite that ruling, the court’s decision to reinstate her remains in force. However, sources within the National Assembly suggest the Senate may attempt to impose new procedural hurdles or conditions ahead of her return—setting the stage for a potential standoff on the floor of the Red Chamber.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension in March followed a heated session over seating arrangements and escalated when she publicly accused Akpabio of sexual harassment. Her suspension sparked widespread outrage from civil society groups and legal observers, many of whom viewed it as a political move to silence a dissenting voice.

The unfolding drama has become one of the most closely watched political showdowns of the year. With her return now set for Tuesday, all eyes will be on the Senate to see whether it honors the court order or ignites a fresh constitutional crisis.

At the time of this report, the Senate leadership has not publicly confirmed its stance on her reinstatement or whether it will appeal the court’s decision. Meanwhile, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is also facing a separate criminal defamation trial, adjourned to September 23.
