Senate Will Approve Presidential Jet if Tinubu Requests, Says Akpabio
In a plenary session held today, Senate President Godswill Akpabio affirmed that the Senate would approve the purchase of a new presidential jet if President Bola Tinubu made such a request. Akpabio emphasized that no such proposal is currently before the Senate.
“We care about the President and we care about the Nigerian people. We will approve things that will benefit the Nigerian people,” Akpabio stated. He assured that the Senate is committed to improving the living standards of the populace while also fulfilling the duties necessary to support the President’s functions.
Akpabio clarified the Senate’s stance, saying, “If his vehicle is bad, we will repair the vehicle. If his plane is bad, we will approve money for the repair of the plane. So that is not an issue. There is nothing before us. I don’t think you should worry about it.”
Addressing allegations of anticipated blackmail, Akpabio recounted a call from the BBC that questioned his previous statements made at Senator Mongunu’s house. “That is what you can call anticipated blackmail,” he said, suggesting that some individuals might be pre-emptively attempting to influence the Senate’s decisions regarding the presidential fleet.
Akpabio noted that there is no current request from the President concerning the acquisition of a new jet. He cited the importance of maintaining the presidential fleet’s safety, referencing incidents involving defective aircraft that led to the deaths of high-ranking officials in other countries.
“The Senate is very responsible. The National Assembly is very responsible. We will look into issues that will benefit the governance of the country,” Akpabio asserted, reiterating the Senate’s commitment to addressing any future necessities, despite any anticipatory blackmail.
Earlier in the session, concerns were raised about fifth columnists spreading propaganda regarding the Senate’s position on the presidential fleet purchase. Akpabio’s statements aimed to dispel any misconceptions and reaffirm the Senate’s dedication to the nation’s well-being and effective governance.
