Nigerian Aviation Ministry Officials Face Probe for Selling $9.6 Million Worth of Helicopters for $1.2 Million

The Nigerian Ministry of Aviation is under intense scrutiny following allegations that officials sold two helicopters, each valued at $4.8 million, for a mere $1.2 million to a private individual. This controversial sale, totaling $9.6 million in assets, has incited public outrage, especially since several government agencies, including the Nigerian Air Force, Navy, and police, had shown interest in acquiring the aircraft.

Chairman of the House Committee on Public Assets, Ademorin Kuye, has taken decisive action by ordering the arrest of the ministry officials involved. Hon. Kuye expressed deep concern over the ramifications of the sale, stating, “This is a blatant misuse of public assets. Lives have been lost due to the unavailability of these helicopters, which were sold off without proper consideration.”

Technical reports from Zaria, Kaduna State, indicate that one helicopter had only 42 flight hours, while the other had 46 hours. Despite their minimal use and excellent condition, the helicopters were sold without adequate consultation with potential government buyers.

“We provided proof of maintenance and received interest from other government entities,” Hon. Kuye emphasized. “It is unacceptable that despite the clear demand from government agencies, these helicopters were auctioned off at a fraction of their value.”

The auction, reportedly conducted on May 24th, resulted in the sale of both helicopters for $1.2 million, as confirmed by internal memos. Concerns have been raised about the transparency and documentation of the sale process.

“There are serious discrepancies in how this auction was conducted,” Hon. Kuye remarked, highlighting procedural irregularities. “The Ministry of Aviation must be held accountable for this negligence and lack of transparency.”

The investigation continues as the nation awaits further details on this troubling transaction.
