Senate Directs Aviation Minister To Halt Planned Demolition In Lagos
The Senate has directed the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika to halt the planned demolition of offices of some Aviation agencies in Lagos State, South-West Nigeria pending outcome of intervention being made by its Committee on Aviation.
The resolution of the Upper Chamber follows a motion by Senator Biodun Olujimi of PDP from Ekiti South on the need to intervene in the intending strike by Aviation unions.
Olujimi in the motion called the attention of the Senate to warning strike by the Union of Air Transport Employees, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, and National Association of Aircrafts Pilots and Engineers.
She noted that the strikes in the Aviation sector have lingered foru over eight years with several agreements signed between the workers unions and government yet to be honoured.
She stated that continuous threats to demolish the headquarters of Aviation agencies including FAAN, NCAA and NAMA in Lagos by the Ministry without adequate alternative offices will lead the unions to strike.
The Senate resolved to mandate its Committee on Aviation, to interface with all parties involved in the impasse.
