Saraki, Wike’s Meeting in Abuja Sparks Speculation Amid PDP’s Leadership Tussle

A meeting between former Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, and the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, in Abuja has generated a buzz of intrigue and speculation within political circles. The encounter, which was captured in a viral video on social media, saw Minister Wike showcasing his culinary skills while entertaining Saraki in his residence.

While some speculated that the meeting was linked to the ongoing chairmanship tussle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reliable sources have informed Sunday Vanguard that it was part of a broader effort to reconcile disgruntled PDP leaders and members.

The visit, however, elicited mixed reactions online, with some on social media drawing comparisons to Wike’s recent hosting of Femi Gbajabiamila, the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Both Saraki and Wike had contested the PDP presidential primary but eventually lost to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Saraki was subsequently appointed to the PDP/Atiku’s campaign team, while Wike and his G5 governors were perceived to have worked against Atiku’s interests and the party during the 2023 presidential election. Wike, who supported President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was later appointed as the FCT Minister but remained an active member of the PDP.

Sources with knowledge of the meeting disclosed that the “Wike group” had resolved to remain in the PDP and actively retain their influence within the party. This decision prompted their engagement with Saraki, who is rapidly gaining supporters and is potentially eyeing the National Chairman position within the party. By aligning with Saraki’s aspirations, the “Wike group” aims to shape the party’s future and ensure their continued relevance.

Failure to engage in the reconciliation process may, according to another source, lead to the emergence of a “hostile Chairman” who could act against the interests of the “Wike group.”

Saraki’s role as a reconciliation figure and bridge-builder, known for his neutrality and capacity to rebuild the party, has been highlighted during this process.

Regarding Saraki’s chairmanship ambitions, his media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu, stated that Saraki had not yet made a decision on the matter. Olaniyonu emphasized that their focus is on awaiting the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Atiku case, after which the PDP would address its leadership issues and reconciliation.
