Rumble in the North: Defense Minister Fires Back at Northern Elders Over Tinubu Criticism
Political tensions have surfaced in the northern region of Nigeria over President Bola Tinubu’s administration. A rift appears to be developing among northern leaders regarding Tinubu’s contribution to the region’s development.
The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, strongly criticized the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), a group of prominent northern leaders, for expressing regret over voting for President Tinubu in 2023. NEF spokesman Abdulaziz Sulaiman had stated that the North would prioritize unity in the 2027 elections and avoid supporting Tinubu again.
Matawalle denounced NEF’s statements as “reprehensible and naive,” accusing the group of undermining political unity and seeking selfish gains. He claimed the NEF was a “political paperweight” intent on bringing the North into disrepute.
He also emphasized that President Tinubu won the 2023 election convincingly and is committed to significant development in the North. Matawalle urged NEF and other critics to support the current administration and work together with President Tinubu for the nation’s progress.
However, NEF’s criticism reflects broader discontent among some northern leaders. Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi recently accused Tinubu of favoring Southern Christians in key appointments, while Bauchi Central Senator Abdul Ningi expressed concern over the administration’s understanding of the country’s challenges.
