Ronwen Williams Leads South Africa to AFCON Third-Place Victory in Dramatic Penalty Shootout

In a thrilling third-place play-off in the Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa emerged victorious over DR Congo in a penalty shootout, securing a bronze medal in the competition. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams once again proved to be the hero, saving two crucial penalties during the dramatic showdown.

The nail-biting match saw South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena hitting the post with the opening penalty, but subsequent kicks from both teams were successful. The contest reached a climax when DR Congo’s captain, Chancel Mbemba, needed to score to seal the win. However, Williams delivered a remarkable save, sending the shootout into sudden death.

In the end, Williams showcased his goalkeeping prowess once more by saving a decisive penalty from Meschak Elia, ultimately securing South Africa’s triumph in the penalty shootout.

Despite the absence of extra time, the match was intense, with DR Congo dominating play but struggling to find the back of the net. Silas Katompa missed two golden opportunities, and Simon Banza and Fiston Mayele also failed to convert their chances.

South Africa, still reeling from their semi-final defeat to Nigeria, showed signs of fatigue with minimal changes to their lineup. In contrast, DR Congo fielded nine new players from their midweek loss to Ivory Coast.

The attention now turns to the upcoming clash between hosts Ivory Coast and Nigeria in Abidjan on Sunday, where the continental title will be decided.
