President Tinubu Changes Plans Following Public Outcry, Delegates VP Shettima for AFCON Final Representation
In response to widespread criticism from Nigerians, President Bola Tinubu has decided to forgo his attendance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between the Nigeria Super Eagles and Côte d’Ivoire. Instead, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead the presidential team in support of the Nigerian squad.
The decision was conveyed through a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, spokesperson for Vice President Shettima, on Saturday. This move comes after Patrice Motsepe, the head of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), had initially confirmed Tinubu’s presence at the stadium for the final on Sunday.
Motsepe’s announcement drew criticism from Nigerians who questioned the president’s priorities, highlighting instances such as his absence during the grieving period for victims of the Plateau Christmas Eve massacre and the recent Bodija explosion in Ibadan.
Expressing their discontent, @holusojy70 tweeted, “He didn’t deem it fit to visit the people of Plateau during their grieving period, Ibadan blast victims weren’t of importance to him, but AFCON final is of great importance to him.”
Another user, @oladare_ayod, voiced concerns about the president’s focus, stating, “I hope our goals won’t be gone like SUBSIDY. He should please stay in Aso Rock and watch from there. The team will bring the trophy home for him. Let him be in charge of the economy, and Shettima in charge of security. We would appreciate Obi to be with the supporters.”
President Tinubu’s decision to delegate representation at the AFCON final reflects a response to public sentiment, redirecting attention to domestic concerns amidst the backdrop of football excitement.
