Nigeria-Argentina Friendly Cancelled Amid Messi Controversy
The highly anticipated friendly match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Argentina has been called off following the controversy surrounding Lionel Messi.
The Argentine star faced backlash after failing to make an appearance for his club, Inter Miami, in a match against Hong Kong XI last week. Messi, a key attraction for the exhibition match, left thousands of fans disappointed and angered as he did not play a single minute.
Scheduled to face Nigeria in Hangzhou, China, in March, Argentina’s plans were derailed by Messi’s absence in the Hong Kong match. The footballer’s failure to take the field in Hong Kong, citing injury, prompted the organisers to offer a 50% ticket refund to disgruntled fans. However, Messi played in Japan just days later, fueling the discontent among supporters.
As a consequence of the widespread disappointment, Hangzhou sports authorities announced the cancellation of the friendly match with Nigeria. In an official statement, they stated, “In view of the current well-known reasons, according to the competent authorities, conditions to hold the friendly match are not mature, therefore (we) have decided to cancel it.”
This development marks a setback for the longstanding football rivalry between Nigeria and Argentina, who have engaged in several friendlies and memorable encounters at various World Cups over the years.
