Rivers State Court Restrains Assembly from Impeaching Governor Fubara

The Rivers State High Court, Isiokpo Division, located in Ikwerre Local Government Area, has issued an interim order that restrains the Rivers State House of Assembly and its Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, from taking any actions related to the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

This judicial decision comes after a motion ex parte was filed on behalf of Governor Fubara by his legal representative, Damian Okoro, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), earlier on Wednesday.

The restraining order has not only been served to Speaker Martin Amaewhule but also extends to the Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol, the Clerk of the House, and the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi.

Presiding over the case, Justice Ben Whyte issued the order, calling for the involved parties to maintain the status quo until the Motion on Notice is determined. The case has been adjourned to the 14th of November, 2023, when the Motion on Notice will be addressed, signaling a critical legal battle ahead in the state’s political landscape.

This development adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing political situation in Rivers State, where Governor Fubara faces impeachment attempts by the State House of Assembly.
