“Return Stolen Pistol in Seven Days or Face the Consequences” NDLEA Warns Bayelsa Community
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a stern seven-day ultimatum to the Oduma community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, demanding the return of a stolen pistol taken from its officers during a recent operation. The agency warned of legal consequences if the community fails to comply.
The ultimatum follows a violent confrontation on Wednesday, where four NDLEA operatives were injured after being assaulted by angry youths from the community. The altercation occurred during a routine operation aimed at arresting suspected drug peddlers. The NDLEA’s operational vehicle was also vandalized in the incident.
In a statement issued by NDLEA Public Relations Officer, Daniel Obah, the agency condemned the attack, noting that the operatives were ambushed by local youths who resisted the arrests. “The youths of the community tried to resist the arrest, which led to the clash and vandalism of the operational vehicle,” Obah stated. He further revealed that the injured officers are currently receiving treatment, with three of them already discharged.
The situation escalated when the youths, suspected to be accomplices of the drug dealers, overpowered the NDLEA officers, seizing a pistol, freeing two suspects, and taking the recovered drug exhibits. The NDLEA described the actions of the community as “false and malicious,” and emphasized that the officers were attacked while trying to lawfully execute their duties.
Joshua Inebika-emi, the Youth President of the Oduma community, claimed the youths only wanted to understand the reasons for the arrests, criticizing the lack of communication with local leaders. He also asserted that the community has long opposed drug dealing, adhering to strict local laws against such activities.
In response, the NDLEA has called on the paramount ruler and community leaders to ensure the return of the stolen pistol, the two suspects, and the drug exhibits within seven days. Failure to do so, the agency warned, will result in legal action.
The NDLEA also urged all well-meaning individuals to support the fight against drug abuse and addiction, highlighting the importance of community cooperation in maintaining law and order.
