“Respect Nigeria’s sovereignty, no unilateral threats,” AU tells US
The African Union (AU) Commission has urged the United States to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and avoid unilateral military threats, calling instead for diplomatic engagement to address the country’s security challenges.
The statement came after President Donald Trump redesignated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” citing alleged persecution of Christians and warning of possible military action against Islamic extremists.
In a statement issued on Friday, the AU Commission said it was “deeply concerned” by Washington’s remarks accusing the Nigerian government of complicity in religious violence. The commission stressed that such claims oversimplify the country’s complex security situation and risk fuelling further instability.
Acknowledging Nigeria’s critical role in regional stability and counterterrorism efforts, the AU reaffirmed its confidence in the country’s ability to manage its internal affairs in line with its constitution and international commitments. It called for international partners, including the US, to support Nigeria through cooperation, intelligence-sharing, and capacity-building initiatives rather than coercive measures.
The AU emphasised that respect for national sovereignty remains central to peace and stability across Africa, warning that unilateral interventions could undermine both Nigeria’s unity and the continent’s broader commitment to peaceful conflict resolution.
