Report: Tinubu Set to Restructure Cabinet, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Likely to be Scrapped
President Bola Tinubu is reportedly planning a major cabinet overhaul, which could include scrapping the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The restructuring aims to improve efficiency and effectiveness within the government, with some ministries expected to be merged or split, and underperforming ministers potentially removed from office.
A source within the Presidency revealed that while the reshuffle has been in discussion for some time, its delay was due to the President’s recent travels. Tinubu is expected to finalize the changes before his departure for the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“The President was supposed to make these announcements last week, but his trip delayed it. He wants to ensure the changes are done while he is in the country. Some ministries will be restructured, and certain ministers will be relieved of their duties,” the source disclosed.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, established in 2019 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, is expected to be one of the key casualties of this restructuring. The ministry has faced allegations of corruption and inefficiency, particularly under its first minister, Sadiya Farouq. Current Minister Dr. Betta Edu was suspended in January amid allegations of misappropriation of funds.
“There are already several agencies handling humanitarian functions, and the President does not see the need for a dedicated ministry for this,” another source explained.
Tinubu had previously warned his cabinet members about the consequences of underperformance, emphasizing that he would not hesitate to remove ministers who failed to meet expectations. The upcoming reshuffle is viewed as a crucial step in aligning the cabinet with the President’s objectives for national development.
As the restructuring process intensifies, reports suggest that some cabinet members are seeking the influence of political godfathers in a bid to retain their positions. However, sources close to the Presidency insist that Tinubu will prioritize national interest over personal loyalties in his decisions.
