Reconciliation: Wike, Fubara Speak on Peace Deal

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has confirmed that he and suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, have resolved their political differences and agreed to work together in the interest of peace and stability. Speaking to journalists Thursday night after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Wike said all parties involved, including the suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, have committed to reconciliation.

“We have all agreed to work together. Everything is over. We are members of the same political family,” Wike said, standing alongside Fubara and Amaewhule. “As humans, we have disagreements. We also have time to settle those disagreements. There is no more acrimony. It’s a day we have to thank the Almighty.”

The closed-door meeting was part of President Tinubu’s continued efforts to end the political crisis that led to the March 18 declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. That decision saw the suspension of the governor, his deputy, and the entire state assembly for six months to allow room for peace talks.

Governor Fubara, in his remarks, thanked the President for his intervention and stressed the importance of maintaining calm in the state. “It’s important that this day has come. What we need in Rivers is peace,” he said. “We shall do everything in our power to sustain peace in Rivers State.”
