Real Reasons Behind Tinubu’s Dismissal of Six Ministers in Cabinet Reshuffle

President Bola Tinubu has dismissed six ministers, a move insiders claim is aimed at restoring focus and credibility to his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Official statements attribute the firings to the need for improved performance aligned with national expectations, but sources close to the administration hint at more specific issues, including alleged misconduct, inefficiency, and actions seen as undermining the administration’s image at home and abroad.

The dismissed ministers—Mrs. Uju Kennedy Ohanenye (Women Affairs), Lola Ade-John (Tourism), Prof. Tahir Mamman (Education), Abdullahi Mohammed Gwarzo (State, Housing and Urban Development), and Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim (Youth Development)—were released from their posts on Wednesday. Betta Edu, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, was also effectively removed from office following her suspension earlier this year amid a separate scandal.

Concerns Over Tinubu’s Cabinet and Previous Reshuffles

The reshuffle marks Tinubu’s third major adjustment to his cabinet since assuming office on May 29, 2023. The President’s initial process for assembling his ministerial team attracted attention when he submitted two batches of nominees to the Senate, ultimately presenting 48 candidates of whom 45 were confirmed. Even before the cabinet’s official swearing-in, Tinubu had reassigned portfolios for some ministers, including former Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, who was moved from the Ministry of Transportation to the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy. Additional reshuffling included Mr. Abubakar Momoh, who transitioned from the Ministry of Youth to the Ministry of Niger Delta Development.

While Tinubu’s reshuffles were intended to streamline his administration’s operations, they have also generated considerable scrutiny over the challenges and political dynamics within his team.

Allegations of Misconduct and Inefficiency: The Reasons Behind Individual Dismissals

1. Betta Edu – Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction

Formerly suspended in January 2024, Betta Edu faced allegations over a memo directing the payment of N585 million to a project accountant’s private bank account. Intended for vulnerable populations in several states, the transaction raised immediate questions, with Edu’s defense failing to sway the administration. This financial scandal, coupled with pressure from civil society groups, eventually led to her suspension and now formal removal.

2. Prof. Tahir Mamman – Education

Known for his controversial policies, Prof. Tahir Mamman drew backlash over his proposed 18-year minimum age requirement for tertiary education, sparking lawsuits and widespread public discontent. The Education for Accelerated Development (EDAD), a prominent educational advocacy group, had called for Mamman’s removal, criticizing his tenure as detrimental to educational progress. EDAD pointed to mismanagement and diplomatic missteps, particularly Mamman’s statements regarding the accreditation of universities in neighboring Benin and Togo. His errors reportedly complicated the participation of Nigerian students in those countries and caused friction between Nigeria’s Ministry of Education and major agencies, including the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

3. Uju Kennedy Ohanenye – Women Affairs

Uju Kennedy Ohanenye’s term as Minister of Women Affairs was marked by a series of controversies. Known for disrupting events that lacked ministry authorization, she also clashed with the House of Representatives over a N1.5 billion fund intended for contractors. Her explanation of the funds’ management was convoluted, leading to significant tension with legislative bodies. Ohanenye also faced backlash after threatening legal action against the United Nations, accusing them of withholding funds designated for Nigerian aid programs. Civil society organizations criticized her comments as unfounded, raising doubts about her understanding of international protocols. Moreover, her controversial stance in a high-profile sexual harassment case at the University of Calabar led to public outcry. Ohanenye was accused of siding with the accused dean, drawing further criticism from women’s advocacy groups.

Tinubu’s Response to Public Concerns

These dismissals indicate President Tinubu’s determination to address public dissatisfaction and restore credibility to his administration. By removing figures perceived as liabilities, Tinubu aims to refocus on his Renewed Hope Agenda without further internal disruptions or negative public perception. Although his cabinet reshuffles have been met with mixed reactions, they underscore his intent to prioritize accountability and ensure that each minister contributes to a streamlined, effective administration.
