RCCG Parish Looted and Burnt Down by Hoodlums; Governor Responds
Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has strongly condemned the recent burning of a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) parish in Kontagora by suspected hoodlums. The incident, which took place in the early hours of Saturday, saw the church looted and set ablaze along the Federal College of Education (FCE) road in Kontagora.
In a statement released on Sunday by his special adviser on print media, Aisha Wakaso, Governor Bago described the attack as “mindless and cowardly.” He expressed deep concern over the assault, calling it not only an attack on the Christian community but also a direct threat to the peace and unity that Niger State holds dear.
“We totally condemn this act,” said Mr. Bago. “This is not just an attack on a place of worship; it is an affront to the peaceful coexistence of all religious and ethnic groups in our state. We assure our Christian brothers and sisters, and all residents of Niger, that their safety, security, and freedom of religion are top priorities for this government.”
Governor Bago has directed all relevant security agencies to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident. He vowed that those responsible for the “horrible act” would be apprehended and brought to justice.
The governor also called for calm among the residents of Kontagora, urging them to avoid retaliatory actions and instead focus on maintaining peace and unity. He reassured the community that his administration is taking all necessary measures to protect places of worship and prevent such regrettable incidents from recurring.
In addition, Governor Bago urged the people of Niger State to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. He pledged the state government’s full support to the affected church and the broader Christian community during this difficult time.
