PSC Chairman: Police Officers Who Fail Promotion Exams Three Times Will Be Retired
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has issued a stern directive that any police officer who fails the compulsory promotion examination three times will be retired from service. The warning came from PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hashimu Argungu, during the conduct of the latest promotion examination at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Monday.
A total of 30 senior officers sat for the exam, including one Assistant Inspector General of Police, two Commissioners of Police, eleven Deputy Commissioners of Police, and sixteen Assistant Commissioners of Police. The exercise, held at the Solomon Arase Chairman’s Conference Hall, is part of a new requirement for career progression in the Nigeria Police Force.
Argungu described the initiative as a long overdue reform that would help restore dignity and professionalism in the Force. He stressed that policing in today’s world demands knowledge, skill, and continuous development, adding that officers unable to meet the standard after three attempts would be retired on grounds of incompetence.
The PSC Chairman also assured that greater diligence will now be applied in the promotion process to prevent past errors, including cases where dead or retired officers were elevated.
The exam was supervised by PSC commissioners Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (rtd), Justice Christine Ladi Dabup (rtd), DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), DIG Uba Bala Ringim (rtd), and Alhaji Abdulfatah Mohammed.
