Proposed Orlu State Faces Backlash from Anambra Representative
Hon Uzokwe Peter Ifeanyi, representing Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency of Anambra State, has voiced strong objections to the proposal for the creation of Orlu State, citing insufficient consultation.
While acknowledging the necessity of an additional state in the Southeast, Ifeanyi criticized the process, highlighting that the proposal was made without proper engagement with affected constituencies. He emphasized that such significant decisions require comprehensive dialogue, particularly involving key regional stakeholders like Ohaneze Ndigbo.
The proposal for Orlu State, which passed its first reading in the House of Representatives last Thursday, was introduced by Hon Ikenga Ugochinyere from Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency, Imo State. The draft bill suggests that the new state, with Orlu as its capital, would be carved out from parts of Imo, Abia, and Anambra states, thereby amending the 1999 Constitution to increase the number of states in Nigeria from 36 to 37.
Ifeanyi expressed frustration that his constituency was included in the proposal without his knowledge, noting, “I’m in the House with you. I have not missed more than three sittings since my election. For such an important matter, consultation with all affected representatives is crucial.” He described the situation as reminiscent of the colonial-era partitioning of Africa, where external forces divided territories without local input.
Ifeanyi underscored that the call for a new state should be managed by the Southeast’s traditional leadership structures. He urged his colleague to withdraw the bill and engage in broader consultations to ensure widespread support. He stressed that unity among Igbos is vital, and disagreements should be resolved through dialogue, not unilateral decisions.
He reaffirmed the support for the creation of an additional state for the Southeast but insisted it must be done appropriately, respecting local governance and community voices. Ifeanyi concluded by noting the importance of collective action through Ohaneze Ndigbo to achieve a consensus that truly reflects the people’s will.
