Prof Folasade Ogunsola emerges as Unilag acting VC

Professor Folasade Ogunsola having secured the highest number of votes in the election held by members of the Senate in the University of Lagos, has been chosen as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

She was reported to have polled 135 votes out of the available 167 votes to emerge winner.

The meeting which was attended by 167 professors, commenced with the candidates being nominated by their colleagues.

The other nominated candidate, Professor Ben Ogbojafor, secured 31 votes, as one vote was declared void.

At the end of the elections, The Chairman of the Senate Emergency committee, Prof Chioma Agomo, announced the results.

The Institution’s Governing Council which was chaired by the Pro-Chancellor, Dr Wale Babalakin, had appointed Prof Omololu Soyombo as acting VC after it sacked the VC, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

The Federal Government however sacked Prof Soyombo and consequently issued a directive to the university’s Senate to nominate an acting VC with immediate effect. ,

The nomination of an acting VC is however pending the outcome of the Special Visitation Panel set up by the President, Muhammadu Buhari.

The new acting VC, Professor Folasade Ogunsola was  the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services during the dispensation of former VC, Prof Toyin Ogundipe.

Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola is a Professor of Medical Microbiology. She specializes in disease control, particularly HIV/AIDS. Ogunsola was reputed as being the first woman to become the Provost of College of Medicine, University of Lagos.
