Private Negotiator Engaged as Kaduna Initiates Talks for the Release of 287 Abducted Pupils

Negotiations are underway for the release of 287 abducted pupils and teachers from Government Secondary School and LEA Primary School, Kuriga 1, in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State. A confidential source within the Kaduna State Government House revealed that the state has enlisted the services of a private negotiator, known for successfully resolving similar abduction cases in the past.

The highly influential negotiator has begun engaging with the bandits responsible for the mass abduction. The incident occurred when armed bandits stormed LEA Primary School, Kuriga, around 8:30 am on Thursday, abducting both pupils and staff members. In response, Governor Uba Sani assured the community during his visit that all abducted children would be safely rescued.

Less than 48 hours after the abduction, the state government initiated negotiations through the private negotiator while the military commenced a search operation in the forests. The government officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized the sensitivity of the situation and the commitment to secure the safe release of the victims.

An emergency security meeting was held by Governor Uba Sani on Friday, although details of the discussions were not disclosed. The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the security meeting but provided no further information.

Meanwhile, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu, has not responded to inquiries as of the time of reporting. In a related incident, at least two worshippers were killed during Friday prayers in Anguwar Makera, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, adding to the rising security concerns in the state.

Parents of the kidnapped pupils, expressing distress, pleaded for the fulfilment of Governor Sani’s promise for the safe return of their children. Reports from the Joint Task Force indicated that over 100 bandits on motorcycles were involved in the abduction, heightening tensions in the state.

The bandits’ activities have also affected neighboring communities, with residents fleeing due to fears of further attacks. The situation remains tense, and the Kaduna State Government is working diligently to ensure the safe release of the abducted pupils and restore a sense of security in the affected areas.

In a separate development, the abductors of over 200 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the Ngala camp in Borno State have not contacted the families for ransom. The Borno State government dispatched a fact-finding team to the Nigeria-Chad border town, emphasizing the need for thorough investigation and immediate action to ensure the safety of the abducted individuals.

As the nation grapples with these abductions, concerns over the increasing insecurity prompt calls for more proactive measures from the government and security forces. President Bola Tinubu has condemned the abductions, assuring ongoing rescue efforts and directing security agencies to prioritize the swift release of the victims.

International organizations such as UNICEF and Amnesty International have also voiced their condemnation, urging comprehensive measures to secure schools and protect citizens from the persistent threat of armed groups. The abduction cases underscore the urgent need for a coordinated and effective response to address the escalating security challenges in the country.
