Pope is Conscious, Receiving Supplemental Oxygen – Vatican
Pope Francis remains conscious but continues to receive high-flow supplemental oxygen following a respiratory crisis and blood transfusions, the Vatican reported yesterday. The 88-year-old pontiff is in critical condition due to a complex lung infection, with further clinical tests underway.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni stated that the pope rested quietly through the night. Doctors remain cautious due to Francis’ advanced age, fragile health, and pre-existing lung condition, which stems from having part of one lung removed in his youth. His recent health struggles have reignited speculation about the possibility of resignation should he become incapacitated.
Francis experienced a severe asthmatic respiratory crisis on Saturday that required high-flow oxygen through a nasal tube. Blood transfusions were also necessary after tests revealed low platelet levels. Despite these challenges, the pope issued a pre-written message expressing confidence in his treatment at Gemelli Hospital, emphasizing that rest is part of his therapy.
Scheduled to celebrate Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica and ordain deacons as part of the Vatican’s Holy Year commemoration, Francis was unable to attend. Instead, Archbishop Rino Fisichella led the service in his place, offering a special prayer for the pope before delivering his pre-prepared homily. Addressing the gathered deacons, Fisichella reassured them of Francis’ presence in spirit despite his hospitalization.
In his message, Francis also acknowledged the upcoming anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, calling it a “painful and shameful occasion for humanity.”
