Man Arrested for Urinating on Vatican’s Holiest Altar at St. Peter’s Basilica

Visitors to St. Peter’s Basilica were left stunned on Friday morning, October 10, when a man urinated on the Altar of Confession—one of the most sacred sites in Catholicism—before being apprehended by police.

According to Corriere della Sera, the man bypassed the barriers surrounding the altar at around 9:30 a.m. and climbed the steps before committing the act in front of hundreds of horrified tourists and worshippers. Video footage circulating online shows him lowering his trousers and urinating on the altar, which stands directly above the tomb of Saint Peter, one of Jesus Christ’s apostles.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as “deeply disturbing,” with many turning away in shock. Plainclothes officers quickly intervened and detained the suspect, who allegedly made an obscene gesture toward the crowd before being taken into custody.

Vatican officials confirmed that Pope Leo XIV was informed of the desecration and was reportedly “shocked” by the incident. The Lepanto Institute, a Catholic advocacy group, has called for the altar to be reconsecrated, describing the event as “a grave act of sacrilege.”

The incident has provoked widespread outrage online, with many faithful expressing anger and sorrow. Some critics suggested that the Vatican’s openness to mass tourism has contributed to a decline in reverence for its holy spaces. One social media user wrote, *“Perhaps we’ve allowed this level of disrespect by treating cathedrals as tourist sites rather than sacred places.”*

This is not the first time St. Peter’s Basilica has been targeted. In 2023, a naked protester with “Save children of Ukraine” written on his back jumped onto the same altar, and earlier this year, another individual was arrested for vandalizing parts of the basilica.

Authorities have not released the identity of the latest suspect, but Italian police confirmed that an investigation is underway. The basilica has been temporarily closed for cleaning and a security review.

Video footage of the incident has been widely shared online.
