Police Warn Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to Cancel Homecoming Rally, Cite ‘Imminent Security Threats’

The Nigeria Police Force in Kogi State has issued a warning to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, urging the cancellation of her planned homecoming rally in Okene. The Kogi State Police Command, acting under the instructions of the state’s Governor Usman Ododo-led administration, justified the ban, citing security concerns. According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya, intelligence reports had indicated that hoodlums were planning to hijack the event and create unrest.

The statement emphasized that the decision to call off the rally was made in the interest of maintaining peace in the state. The police warned that any attempt to disrupt the peace would be met with legal action. The force’s concerns were based on information suggesting that the rally could become a flashpoint for violence, jeopardizing the current stability in the region.

However, the move has been met with widespread criticism, particularly from supporters of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. Many view the police action as politically motivated, accusing the government of using security threats as an excuse to suppress opposition voices. The senator, a prominent figure in Kogi State politics, has frequently clashed with the ruling administration over governance issues, further fueling claims that the ban is a tactic to undermine her political activities.

Public outrage has been rampant, with many taking to social media to express their disapproval and demand the reversal of the decision. Critics have called the ban an abuse of power, and some have suggested that the government is using the police to curb legitimate political discourse. Political analysts believe that this development could escalate tensions in the lead-up to the next election cycle in Kogi State.

The opposition has called for an independent review of the security threat claims and has urged the federal government to intervene to ensure fairness in the state’s political environment.
