Police Recover Seven Unexploded Bombs in Borno
The Nigeria Police Force has successfully recovered seven unexploded military ordnances in Maiduguri, Borno State, following reports from alert residents. The operation was conducted by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit, which swiftly secured the affected areas.
According to a statement from the Force headquarters, six unexploded projectiles and a mortar bomb were found near an uncompleted building in the Dala Kacchallah area. Initial investigations suggest the ordnances, likely washed ashore by recent flooding, were abandoned by local scavengers. Additionally, a military hand grenade was discovered at the Gwange Riverbank.
The EOD-CBRN team safely evacuated all the ordnances, ensuring no loss of life, injuries, or property damage. Following the operation, the team declared the areas safe and conducted explosive risk awareness campaigns to educate residents on handling such incidents.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun commended the professionalism and swift response of the EOD-CBRN Unit. He highlighted their consistent efforts in Borno State, where several similar explosive devices have been recovered in recent months, preventing potential disasters.
The police assured the public of ongoing investigations to trace the origins of the recovered items and to prevent future occurrences. The Inspector-General also urged citizens to avoid handling suspicious objects and to report them immediately to the authorities.
