Police Raid IPOB/ESN Camp in Imo, Arrest 29 Suspects, Recover Arms

The Imo State Police Command has announced the arrest of 29 suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), following a raid on a camp in Nempi, Oru West Local Government Area.

According to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ADP Henry Okoye, the suspects—25 men and four women—were apprehended on Saturday by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit. The operation was reportedly made possible after the arrest of 25-year-old Anukuru Nnana Emmanuel on September 15 in Mgbidi. Emmanuel’s confession led the police to the camp, where the arrests were made.

During the raid, police recovered a significant cache of arms, including four pump-action guns, two locally-made revolvers, five locally-made pistols, and three AK-47 magazines. Authorities also seized a Point of Sale (POS) machine, 20 live cartridges, a white SUV, and local bulletproof charms believed to have been used by the group. Additionally, over 200,000 naira, allegedly extorted from kidnapping victims, was found at the scene.

“This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by the Imo State Police Command to combat violent crimes and dismantle criminal groups in the state,” Okoye said. He added that investigations are ongoing, particularly to trace the manufacturers of the locally-made firearms.

The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, stressing its commitment to ensuring public safety and restoring peace across Imo State.
