Police Headquarters Bans Use of POS, E-payment Devices in Stations Nationwide

In response to widespread concerns over alleged extortion and illicit transactions involving point-of-sale (POS) machine operators in collaboration with certain police personnel, the Police headquarters has reaffirmed the ban on the utilization of POS machines and other electronic mobile money transaction devices within police stations and facilities across the country.

In an official statement released on Monday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, emphasized that violators would face disciplinary actions at police commands and formations, including the leadership at such establishments.

Adejobi stated, “The ban is implemented to safeguard the integrity and security of police operations, aiming to prevent perceived corrupt practices. It is crucial for clearing Commands/Formations of potential criminal intrusion under the guise of such transactions and maintaining discipline within the Force.”

Despite prior directives, the Force leadership discovered ongoing non-compliance within certain Commands and Formations. Adejobi conveyed the Inspector General of Police’s warning that any breach of this ban would result in severe sanctions against the leadership of the affected Commands and Formations.

Highlighting the risks associated with electronic payment devices within police facilities, Adejobi noted potential compromises of sensitive information, financial irregularities, and facilitation of illicit activities. He stressed, “Strict adherence to this directive is non-negotiable.”

The Inspector General of Police urged all officers and personnel to comply without exception. Any police officer or POS operator found violating this order or engaging in illicit financial transactions will face appropriate disciplinary measures and criminal action in accordance with existing laws and regulations. The Command and Formation leadership will also be held accountable for any such violations.
