Police Detain Constables Over Alleged Extortion of Dutch Woman in Oyo

In a recent incident along the Iseyin/Ogbomosho Road in Oyo, two Special Constables have been apprehended by the police for their involvement in an extortion attempt on a Dutch woman rider. The incident gained widespread attention after a video of the constables demanding money went viral.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrest in a statement, condemning the actions of the constables as “unprofessional, unacceptable, and punishable.” The Commissioner of Police for Oyo State, CP Adebola Ayinde Hamzat, swiftly initiated a disciplinary procedure in response to the incident.

Adejobi emphasized that the police authority has unequivocally denounced the reprehensible act, directing that both the constables involved and their supervising Divisional Police Officer face appropriate sanctions. The Commissioner described the behavior as incompatible with the principles of policing and vowed that such misconduct would not be tolerated.

In addressing the broader issue, Adejobi highlighted ongoing efforts within the police force to implement a reorientation program. This initiative, spearheaded by Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, aims to address and rectify issues of this nature. The goal is to reposition the Nigeria Police, ensuring a more professional and responsible approach to law enforcement.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining high standards within the police force and the ongoing commitment to reforms aimed at enhancing public trust and confidence in law enforcement agencies.
