Police Capture Notorious Bank Robbers in Rivers State
The Rivers State Police have apprehended two dangerous armed robbers, Ikenna Obiko and Isichukwu Eneji, notorious for targeting bank customers in Port Harcourt. The duo, arrested on 12th February while riding a motorcycle, confessed to a series of crimes, including loitering outside banks and robbing unsuspecting customers.
According to a statement by SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Rivers Police Command, the suspects admitted to tailing customers after spotting significant withdrawals. Their modus operandi involved robbing individuals of their money at bank premises, hotwiring and stealing motorcycles, and even opening parked vehicles with a master key to seize withdrawn cash and valuables.
The police further revealed that the duo was involved in the recent robbery of a pickup truck carrying Indomie noodles, along with the theft of one hundred thousand Naira (N100,000) from the driver. The suspects, currently in custody at Borikiri Police Station, also confessed to stealing three motorcycles, one of which has been recovered.
Hailing from Oguta in Imo State, Ikenna, a father of two, claimed he was lured into a life of crime by a now-deceased community leader, while Isichukwu, a father of three, stated that his late uncle tutored him in the art of robbery. The suspects had relocated to Port Harcourt last year amid the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) crisis in Imo State and other parts of the South East.
Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, directed the immediate arraignment of the two suspects in court. He urged residents to exercise vigilance during banking transactions, avoid making stops with substantial amounts of money or valuables in their cars, and encouraged banks to report any suspicious activities around their premises to the police.
As the police continue their efforts to combat crime, Commissioner Disu called on the public to be law-abiding and support the ongoing fight against criminality in Rivers State.
