Police Arrest Suspected Gunrunner in Anambra
The Anambra State Police Command has announced the arrest of Friday Emenike, popularly known as Ekpo, a 42-year-old man from the Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, who is suspected of supplying firearms to criminals operating in Awka and its surrounding areas.
According to a statement issued on Monday by Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the command, the arrest followed the confession of two robbery suspects apprehended earlier. The suspects allegedly revealed that they rented weapons from Ekpo for their illegal activities.
Acting on this information, the Anti-Cultism Squad conducted a raid at a black spot in Umunaga village, Awka South Local Government Area, and arrested two individuals—Okechukwu Chinwuko, 27, and Ezenwa Chinedu, 22. During the operation, police recovered a pump-action gun, three live cartridges, a cutlass, criminal charms, and substances suspected to be hard drugs. Two female victims, reportedly subjected to sexual abuse by the suspects, were also rescued during the raid.
Further investigations and interrogations led to the swift arrest of Ekpo, who is accused of renting out firearms to criminals. The police confirmed that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
