Police arrest okada rider over alleged role in kidnappings in Imo
The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a commercial motorcycle operator, popularly known as an okada rider, for allegedly assisting a string of kidnapping operations in the World Bank area of Owerri.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was apprehended on Saturday after police operatives raided a hideout in the area. Authorities say he admitted to taking part in several abductions within the World Bank axis and nearby communities.
Police reported recovering 15 AK-47 rifles and quantities of ammunition from the location.
Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo command, said the operation was carried out by officers from the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja.
“It is true that we are aware of the information, but it was police from Abuja headquarters that effected the arrest,” Okoye said. “The command will look into the matter and ensure more arrests are made in connection with crimes in the area.”
Residents described the arrest as a significant development in efforts to address insecurity in the commercial district.
The police said investigations are ongoing to identify other suspects linked to the case and to recover additional weapons and evidence.
