Police Arrest Doctor Over Woman’s Death During Caesarean Section in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a medical doctor following the death of a 36-year-old woman, Mrs. Susan Omoye-Okporan, during a caesarean section at a private hospital in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of the state.

Police spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, in a statement on Friday, August 22, 2025, said detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

“I can confirm the arrest of the doctor, and the command’s detectives are also investigating the matter,” Yamu stated.

According to reports, the surgery was carried out on August 2, 2025. While the baby survived, the woman allegedly developed complications and died shortly after the procedure.

The deceased’s family has accused the doctor of gross professional negligence, alleging that he acted carelessly during the surgery. A family source told *Punch* that they intend to pursue the case to its logical conclusion.

Findings at the police headquarters in Benin indicated that the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) had taken over the case from the Uromi Police Division more than two weeks ago.

An autopsy has already been conducted, and investigators are awaiting expert interpretation of the results to determine further action.
