Peter Obi’s Defection Won’t Weaken Labour Party in Anambra – Okoye
The Anambra State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has dismissed concerns that the defection of its 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, would weaken the party’s strength in the state.
The party said it remains united, stable and well-positioned for the 2027 general elections despite Obi’s exit.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Anambra State Chairman of the Labour Party, Comrade Peter Okoye, following Obi’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on December 31, 2025.
Okoye assured party members and supporters that Obi’s departure, along with that of some other individuals, would not diminish the party’s structure or electoral prospects in Anambra State.
According to him, the Labour Party is built on ideology, institutional strength and collective sacrifice, not on any single individual.
He said the party’s strength in Anambra remains anchored on its grassroots support, disciplined membership and functional structures across wards, local government areas and zones.
“The Labour Party in Anambra State remains solid, united and focused. Our strong connection with the people continues to drive our growth and relevance,” Okoye said.
The chairman also noted that the party’s national leadership remains intact, with the Governor of Abia State serving as leader of the party and Senator Nenadi Usman providing direction at the national level. He said this leadership arrangement has ensured cohesion and organisational stability nationwide.
Okoye disclosed that the party has recently undergone internal consolidation, including the revitalisation of its leadership organs and renewed grassroots mobilisation across Anambra State.
He added that the Labour Party is now more disciplined, resilient and strategically positioned to compete effectively in the 2027 general elections at both state and national levels.
The chairman urged party members to remain steadfast and actively engaged, stressing that current challenges would only strengthen the party’s commitment to integrity, accountability and people-oriented governance.
He also commended the party’s youths, women and grassroots mobilisers for their dedication and sacrifices in sustaining the ideals of the Labour Party.
Reaffirming the party’s commitment to offering a credible alternative to Ndi Anambra and Nigerians, Okoye said the Labour Party remains open to new members who share its vision of justice, equity and good governance.
He expressed optimism that the party would emerge as a formidable political force in Anambra State and across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.
