Peter Obi Was Forced on Me as VP Pick by Jonathan – I Packaged Him for Atiku – Reno Omokri
Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has claimed that he and Senator Ben Murray-Bruce were behind the selection of Peter Obi as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election. Speaking via a post on X, Omokri stated that former President Goodluck Jonathan instructed him to push for Obi’s nomination, despite his own personal dislike for the former Anambra governor.
“Peter Obi sent me his CV and called to ask, ‘Reno, have you gotten the CV? Check. Refresh.’ He was sending me CV unsolicited,” Omokri said, adding that Obi was actively seeking the position.
Omokri emphasized that his support for Obi was a matter of loyalty, not preference. “I don’t particularly like Peter Obi. The reason I was doing that is because I was instructed by former President Jonathan that this is the man he wants, and I’m a loyal person.”
He also revealed that Atiku Abubakar had called him directly to find a suitable vice presidential candidate. “Atiku called me and said I should headhunt a vice presidential candidate for him. As he dropped the phone, the next person I called was President Jonathan. And President Jonathan told me it is Peter Obi.”
Omokri concluded with a warning that he would publicly expose Obi if he denies this version of events. Obi ultimately ran as the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alongside Atiku in the 2019 general elections.
