Peter Obi Gets US Honorary Citizenship
Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, has been conferred honorary citizenship of the State of Georgia in the United States. He shared the news on Friday through a post on X, formerly Twitter, after participating in activities marking Black Congressional Week in Washington, DC.
Obi, who is also a former governor of Anambra State, said the week’s engagements strengthened his resolve to work toward a new Nigeria built on visionary and responsible leadership. On Thursday, September 25, he took part in Georgia-focused events of the Black Congressional Week, including a reception hosted by US Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. Discussions at the reception centred on African democracy and development.
During the trip, Obi met with Kim Clark, CEO of Georgia Power, the state’s largest independent power company, and described their conversation as insightful. He also addressed participants at the One Voice Africa event, where he called for stronger efforts to promote good governance across the continent.
The highlight of the day, he said, was receiving honorary citizenship of Georgia, an honour he described as humbling and motivating. Obi emphasized that the experience was not only about recognition but also about learning, serving, and reaffirming his commitment to building a better Nigeria.
