“Person in Charge of Our National Grid Must Be a Two-Minutes Man” – Nigerians React to Frequent Nationwide Blackouts
Frustration is boiling over among Nigerians as another collapse of the national power grid led to a fresh wave of blackouts on November 7. This recent incident, occurring only two days after a previous outage, marks the 12th grid failure of 2024, prompting Nigerians to take to social media to voice their anger and disappointment over the country’s power crisis.
The frequent outages have sparked growing calls for accountability, with many demanding the resignation of the power minister and questioning whether external influences are sabotaging efforts to improve Nigeria’s energy stability. Some Nigerians are pointing fingers at what they believe to be vested interests from the generator import and oil industries, arguing these groups may benefit from an unreliable national grid.
Social media platforms were flooded with criticism and humor-tinged frustrations. @Esteembehemoth highlighted the regularity of the blackouts with a weary comment, “Every Eke market day. Sigh.” The phrase references traditional market day cycles, suggesting that grid failures have become almost as predictable.
Others, like @MrLekan213, shared their weariness with the failing system, remarking, “I talk ham say na SS be this national grid,” a statement reflecting public skepticism and fatigue.
For many, the issue is beyond inconvenience—it’s a crisis. User @carsblogerrrr voiced this concern plainly: “Enough is enough! The National Grid has failed us again. How are we supposed to live, work, or even survive when we can’t depend on basic electricity? This isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a crisis. We demand immediate action and solutions from our leaders! Sack the Minister of Power—this shows he can’t do his job!”
Amid the growing backlash, conspiracy theories have also gained traction. Some Nigerians, like @Oluwatoyinzoe, believe the grid’s failures could be intentional, benefiting certain industries. “Generator importers and oil cabals at work—how will they make money if the power supply is constant? The Minister of Power is only cooking stories by saying the facilities are poor… The government needs to go hard after them if they want to solve this problem once and for all.”
The issue of corruption also became a target. User @ucnwali pointed to a deeper systemic problem, quipping, “If only our National Grid was as strong as our National Greed.”
Finally, @victor_oyibes summed up a widespread sentiment with a sharp critique, stating, “The person in charge of this grid must be a 2-minutes man,” a cutting reference to what many feel is the ineptitude at the highest levels of grid management.
