“I Am Neither Sick Nor Dead” — Rochas Okorocha Debunks Death Rumors, Blames Jealousy for Fake News

In a firm response to recent rumors of his supposed demise, Senator Rochas Okorocha, former Governor of Imo State, addressed what he described as baseless fabrications fueled by envy over the warm reception he received at the funeral of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

Through a statement released on November 6, 2024, by his Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha refuted claims circulating on social media that he had died in a London hospital from a fictitious illness dubbed “acute gorilla.” Okorocha clarified that he was healthy, had not traveled abroad recently, and had been present at Iwuanyanwu’s burial in Owerri, where he continued to enjoy strong public support.

“Contrary to these unfounded rumors, Rochas Okorocha is neither sick nor dead,” the statement read. “He has been hale and hearty, actively participating in engagements, including services in Abuja honoring respected Igbos like Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.”

The statement condemned the sources of the rumor, describing them as “dead in spirit” and insinuating that jealousy was behind their attempt to undermine Okorocha’s positive public image. The former governor, known for his philanthropic activities, received noticeable applause during the burial, which his team suggested might have provoked the resentment leading to the fake news.

“These false reports stem from resentment over the ovation he received,” the statement continued. “We don’t curse those whom God has blessed; instead, we pray for the healing and repentance of those who spread such falsehoods.”

Okorocha’s message concluded with an appeal for understanding and compassion, encouraging supporters to pray for those spreading the rumors, rather than harboring ill will. The senator has consistently been involved in events honoring notable figures in Igbo society, remaining active in political and social circles since leaving office in 2019.
