Bolt Driver Makes U-Turn, Apologizes to Abia Lawmaker After Viral Assault Incident

Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, has publicly apologized to Alex Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member representing Aba North/South in Abia State, following a physical altercation over a package delivery.

In a video released on Thursday, Abuwatseya expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging his part in the misunderstanding. He extended an apology to Ikwechegh and called on Nigerians to move past the incident.

“Good day, Nigerians. My name is Stephen Abuwatseya,” he began in the video. “I had a misunderstanding with Rt. Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh a few days ago. I want to apologize to him for whatever I might have done to provoke such anger.” Abuwatseya emphasized the need for national unity, urging Nigerians to avoid division along religious or regional lines and instead focus on moving the country forward.

The driver also expressed gratitude to his family and supporters, stating, “I want to thank my family, my parents, my brothers, uncles, and everyone who stood by me. I appreciate all of you. God bless Nigeria.”

The altercation, which reportedly took place on October 28, was initially covered by The Punch and sparked widespread discussion online. According to reports, Abuwatseya was making a package delivery of snails to Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, when the altercation occurred. In video footage captured by Abuwatseya, Ikwechegh was seen visibly angry, slapping the driver and making threats after the driver requested that he come outside to collect his package.

Following the viral video, Ikwechegh issued a public apology, acknowledging his conduct and expressing regret. Posting on Instagram, the lawmaker apologized to Abuwatseya, the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Assembly, stating that his actions fell short of the standards expected from a public official.

Ikwechegh also noted that both parties had reached a resolution through alternative dispute measures, describing the agreement as “mutual and respectful.”
