Nationwide Blackout: Nigeria’s National Grid Suffers First Collapse of 2025
In a troubling start to 2025, Nigeria’s national power grid suffered a collapse on Saturday, leaving millions without electricity. The incident occurred at 1:56 pm, according to data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal, and has been met with widespread frustration and concern.
This marks the first grid collapse of the year but continues a pattern of instability that plagued the nation in 2024, during which the grid failed a record 12 times. As of now, authorities have not disclosed the cause of the latest failure.
The blackout has disrupted businesses, hospitals, and households across the country, forcing many to rely on alternative power sources. Citizens have taken to social media to voice their anger and demand urgent solutions to the chronic issues affecting the power sector.
The government’s handling of the situation has drawn sharp criticism, with calls for immediate reforms to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply.
